Larimar (also lorimar) is a rare blue variety of found only in the. Its colorations vary from white, light-blue, green-blue to deep blue. The deep blue variant is known as volcanic blue. (sometimes called “Atlantis Stone” and “Dolphin Stone”)

Genesis

Many million years ago (around 20 milloions) rocks, and erupted within the of the south coast of the island. These rocks contained cavities or which were later filled with a variety of minerals including the blue pectolite. These pectolite cavity fillings are a secondary occurrence within the volcanic flows, and plugs. When these rocks erode the pectolite fillings are carried downslope to end up in the alluvium and the beach gravels.

History

in the year 1916 the parish priest of Barahona, Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, had applied to the Treasury Department for the exploration privilege and the exploitation of the mine. But this never happened.

In1974 when at the foot of the Range, the coastal province of Barahona, a flash of blue in the beach sand caught the attention of Miguel Méndez and volunteer Norman Rilling and they scooped down to rediscover larimar.

The stone was named by. Miguel after his beautiful young daughter’s name Larissa and the word for the sea (mar) and formed Larimar, by the colors of the water of the Caribbean Sea, where it was found.

As it turns out, the few stones they found were sediment, washed into the sea by the . An upstream search revealed the iin the range and before long the Los Chupaderos mine tapped the only known larimar outcropping in the world.

Geology

Geologically speaking, larimar is a variety of, or a rock composed largely of pectolite, an acid silicate hydrate of and. Although pectolite is found in many locations, none have the unique volcanic blue coloration of larimar. This blue color, distinct from that of other pectolites, is the result of cobalt substitution for calcium.

The powers of the Larimar Gemstone are believed to help us view events from a different perspective; it softens, enlightens and heals in a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual way

Larimar has a loyal following of admirers. It has been quite versatile in its applications to other jewelry varieties. The varieties of larimar that lack brown or red impurities are typically valued higher as they are considered more beautiful.  Many consumers prefer the white streaking to give the larimar more of a natural oceanic look.
